Installed Vacuum Hoses

Vacuum leaks are annoying to track down and after a while the vacuum hoses on our car start to get brittle. They are also black so they are hard to trace around. So I decided to replace mine with red silicon ones from HoseTechniques which last much longer and is easier to see. This is an easy procedure to do and takes about 4 hours working without rush. You will get bruised knuckles and having small arms is helpful for reaching some of the hoses under the intake manifold. First you have to order the hose. I ordered their kit but I decided to make an itemized list for those of you who want more specifics because they just give you the hose and tools but list of all the hoses you need to replace. This is also useful for those who just want to order the hose. All of these numbers are for my Supra which is an 1989 Turbo with all the gadgets on it so your needs may vary. But it is a good starting point and when ordering hose you should get extra anyways in case you need some later.

Hose Summary
ID (mm) Total Length (cm)
3.5 435.0
4.0 167.0
6.0 271.0
8.0 100.5

To do the replacement pick a hose, replace it and then move on to the next one. DO NOT pull them all off the car at the same time, you will probably have a nightmare putting everything back together. I suggest precutting all of the hose so that you don't get it all dirty cutting when you need it. You just need to keep them organized but since length is the only thing that matters its not to difficult. If the old hose is sticking, like most will, take a razor blade and carefully cut a slit, be careful not to cut too deep, so you can then peal it loose. After you are all done start the car and check the level of vacuum it should be around 21 in/Hg if not then something came loose. If it wasn't 21 in/Hg before you started then maybe you missed a hose or something else is leaking.
