So you just got your supra. I have seen this question come up a
lot so I decided to make another FAQ, I seem to like them, to describe
what things you should and shouldn't do, and to give you a good
starting point as to sources of information.
The first thing you should do before you go flying around in your
new toy is to give it a new set of fluids. Even if they look good
or the dealer/seller did this, do it again so you know what is in
there and when it was done. The to do list is as follows:
It is best if you do them yourself as it will start to give you
a feel for your car. But if that isn't possible then find a trusted
mechanic in your area.
After the fluids are changed next are the standard maintenance
items. During the fluid change you should be able to check a lot
of them to see which ones need tending to. In addition to the normal
maintenance schedule at this point you should tend to the following
items:
Since you already did the fluids this list is small unless you
are at the big milestones for maintenance like 60k. Now before you
start upgrading it, drive it like this for 4 months to learn the
car and see what breaks or needs tending to. Your car is over 10
years old so things will break and you don't want to have dumped
3k in mods only to blow your head gasket and have to drop another
2k to fix that. You can save a lot of money if you do things slowly
according to a upgrade plan that keeps you from having to go back
over the same area many times.
While you are working on your car and pondering what upgrades you
need you will want to do lots of research on the web. Here are some
basic links that will do good to get you started:
Sorry for all the links back to my page, but I got a lot of info
here :). The best advice I can give you after this is listen and
read the list postings to get ideas on how things work and what
things break, go slowly and never do anything half ass or you will
get bit in the end, don't upgrade something when what is there already
works fine, and do lots of reading and researching.
